Bangkok - The Real Boom...

http://bangkoktoday-blog.blogspot.com//
The real boom started in the second of the fifties. In those years nearly as many new building were added to Bangkok as in the first two hundred years of its histry. Most of them, moreover, are radically different in design and function from anything in the city's past-apartment blocks, hotels, shopping center, bowling alleys, offices, cinemas,bts-skytrain, mrt-underground train- transforming the new Bangkok to such an extent that an old timer returning after an absence of, say, many years might find it impossible to get his bearings in Sukhumvit area. The Road itself is now a noisy, eightlane avenuethat increase in popularity. From only a few hundred first class hotel rooms available in the city, the city's total has risen to more than 20,000 a sizeable proportion of them either on or near Sukhumvit. The shopping center : today there are many dozens, and still more under construction. Silom Road once a tranquil, prodominantly residential area, is line with glassy, air conditioned office buildings. The New Petchburi Road, which didn't even exist twenty years ago, has become a major traffic artery by day, and by night a garish striof surpass anything to be found elsewhere in modern Asia.
